🚨 ONLINE WORKSHOP SERIES ALERT! Metabolic & Endocrine Management

💰 $40 AUD / SESSION (MEMBER DISCOUNT AVAILABLE!)

This workshop series is designed for nurses, paramedics, diabetes educators and other clinicians working in community and mobile care settings. These workshops will run fortnightly over 2-hour sessions, starting November 20, 2026.

The workshops focus on common chronic metabolic and endocrine conditions encountered in the community, with particular attention to recognising changes from a patient’s usual clinical baseline, identifying early deterioration, and deciding what can be safely assessed and managed on site and when further medical assessment is required.

A substantial part of the workshop will focus on diabetes in everyday community practice. Participants will review the recognition and initial management of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, interpretation of glucose patterns and HbA1c, and the principles of sick-day management. Common diabetes medications will be approached from a practical perspective: how they work, their clinically relevant adverse effects, and how illness, reduced food intake, dehydration or changes in a patient’s condition can alter their safety. Particular attention will be given to increasingly encountered therapies such as SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists.

The workshop will also address acute metabolic deterioration arising in patients with chronic disease, including recognition of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), euglycaemic DKA and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS). Participants will learn which clinical findings and point-of-care measurements are useful in the field, what initial actions are appropriate within their field of practice, and which findings should trigger urgent escalation.

Beyond diabetes, the course will introduce selected adrenal and thyroid disorders that may be overlooked in community care, particularly when they present through non-specific complaints such as fatigue, weakness, falls, confusion or unexplained functional decline. Medication history will be used as an important clinical clue, including recognition of patients at risk of adrenal insufficiency or medication-related endocrine dysfunction.

Bone health, frailty and falls will also be considered from a community perspective, including fracture risk, potentially modifiable contributors to falls, and opportunities for early recognition and prevention in older or vulnerable patients.

This is not an emergency medicine course. The emphasis is on chronic metabolic and endocrine disease, early recognition of clinically important change, appropriate in-situ assessment and first actions, and understanding when the patient can be monitored, should be reviewed by their GP or specialist team, or requires urgent escalation.

Throughout the workshops, practical field algorithms, red flags and interactive clinical cases will be used to translate endocrine knowledge into real-world decision-making. Participants will also develop a structured approach to communicating relevant findings and concerns to GPs, diabetes/endocrine teams and emergency services.

* A Google Meet link will be provided upon registration.
