Meet Melissa Tafea

Melissa Tafea is a registered Extended Care Paramedic based in Auckland, Aotearoa, New Zealand, currently working within a primary care and community health setting in South Auckland. Her professional background spans frontline ambulance operations, clinical education, telehealth, and hospital-based training, with a strong focus on equitable, culturally responsive healthcare delivery and improving access to care for communities with high healthcare needs.

Melissa is currently undertaking a Master of Philosophy at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), researching how Extended Care Paramedics can improve access to culturally safe primary care and support early intervention and heart health outcomes for Pacific children in South Auckland. Her professional and teaching interests include community paramedicine, urgent and primary care integration, cultural safety, workforce development, and strengthening Māori and Pacific representation within paramedic and community healthcare spaces.
