Senior Mental Health Consultant & Practitioner-Scholar

Special Forces Medic | Remote Health Specialist | Educator & Clinical Advocate

From slaughterhouse floors and local boxing rings in regional Queensland to the elite ranks of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) and award-winning remote healthcare delivery, my career has been defined by resilience, adaptability, and an unshakable commitment to human wellbeing.

Overcoming early-life struggles with dyslexia and illiteracy through the mentorship of transformational military educators, I transitioned from a Special Forces Medic into a Registered Nurse, University Lecturer, and recognised leader in remote community mental health. With over three decades of healthcare experience spanning defence force medicine, acute mental health, alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and remote primary care, I bridge the gap between frontline operational reality and strategic clinical education.

  • Award-Winning Practice: Recipient of the Nursing Excellence Award (2004) for innovative service delivery to remote communities across South Australia while practising with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

  • Academic & System Leadership: Former Lecturer at the University of South Australia and curriculum developer for TAFE SA, designing and delivering state-wide education packages across mental health disciplines.

  • Frontline Grounding: Formatively educated in bushcraft, tracking, and community connection by local Indigenous elders in my youth—a foundation that deeply informs my culturally safe, person-centred approach to care.

Professional Journey

Frontline Foundation & Defence Force Medicine

Starting my working life in the security and mining sectors, I joined the Australian Defence Force (ADF), serving with 3 RAR before being selected for cross-training as a Special Forces Medic with the SASR. Overcoming severe dyslexia with the support of dedicated mentors at the Army School of Health, I earned my medic qualification, served across Far North Australia, and officially transitioned to civilian healthcare as an Enrolled Nurse in 1993.

Clinical Mastery & Higher Education

Driven to expand my scope of practice, I completed my Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1996, alongside postgraduate studies in Mental Health. My clinical footprint spans:

  • Remote & Rural Practice: Specialist consulting across Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in remote SA.

  • Workforce Capacity Building: Educating clinicians, university students, and vocational trainees across complex behavioural management, ethics, and diagnostic frameworks.

Special Interest Domains & Thought Leadership

I consult, educate, and present across several specialised clinical and therapeutic domains:

  • Translational Anxiety: Reframing anxiety not strictly as a "disorder," but as our foundational human emotion that governs decision-making and performance.

  • Psychedelic Medicine & Plant-Based Therapies: Exploring the emerging paradigm of entheogens, mycology, and psychedelic-assisted therapies for complex mental health conditions.

  • Diagnostic Frameworks & DRGs: Demystifying Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs) and psychiatric classifications for practical clinical application.

  • Complex Behaviour & Therapy Modalities: Advanced application of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and non-traditional interventions for personality disorders and challenging behaviours.

  • Applied Healthcare Ethics: Navigating moral injury, clinical duty of care, and ethical decision-making in high-stakes environments.

"Anxiety—our oldest emotion—governs us. We must understand and realise this if we are to realise our future."

Connect & Collaborate

I am always open to consulting engagements, clinical debriefing, workshop facilitation, and strategic healthcare partnerships.
